The human body is composed of approximately 75% water, so it’s no wonder it is such a critical component to our overall health and wellness. Did you know, by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated? That’s right! By the time most of us feel the urge to drink something, we’re already dehydrated, and we often make this worse by reaching for coffee, soda, juice, or other beverages that give us the illusion of being “thirst quenching”.
So how much water should you be drinking? We’ve all heard the age old “8 x 8oz glasses” of water per day, but new research suggests this is entirely wrong. On average (without factoring in things such as physical activity, climate, illness, or environment) a person should consume half their body weight (measured in pounds) in ounces. For example, a 200 pound man or woman should be consuming at least 100 ounces of water a day. Dehydration, whether mild or severe can cause a wide array of problems ranging from fatigue, high blood pressure, skin disorders such as eczema, high cholesterol, digestive disorders, allergies, and more. On the other hand, some researchers estimate a person who increases their water consumption by 1.5 litres a day would burn an extra 17,400 calories for an approximate weight loss of 5lbs. The key is balance.
If you’re like most people, getting the required amount of water can be a challenge. If you don’t feel thirsty, you likely won’t remember to take those extra sips. A great way to solve that problem is with some free apps that are available for both iPhone and Android users (see links below). Both apps are completely free and provide great flexibility with not only reminding you to drink enough water, but also logging and tracking your intake so you can be sure you’re getting enough.
If you struggle with the flavour of water (or lack thereof), try incorporating some flavour enhancers like sliced lemons or limes, fruit such as apples and berries, or therapeutic-grade essential oils. All will enhance the flavour of your water, but also provide added vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients. Give the recipe down below a try or experiment with anything you like!
