Dr. Joseph J. Collins, RN, ND is a Naturopathic Physician trained at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Portland, Oregon, and licensed in the State of Washington. His Naturopathic Medical practice has always focused on an integrative approach to healthcare, with an emphasis on integrative & functional endocrinology, botanical medicine (phytotherapeutics) and cellular signaling. His focus is on the identification and clinical application of international research that reveals how specific herbal constituents, nutrients, systemic enzyme therapies and other natural agents target receptors on cellular and nuclear membranes to affect cellular function.
His cell signaling approach is a fundamental concept within his development of Hormone Specific Formulations™, and his development of the phytocrine™ model to describe the plant-endocrine response.
Dr Collins has identified specific herbs to improve the production and the function of thyroid hormones. This includes specific herbs that supply bio-available iodine to thyroid cells (thyrocytes), increasing iodine uptake by thyrocytes by affecting the sodium-iodine symporter proteins on the cell membranes and by increasing T3 & T4 production and secretion from the thyrocytes. Once the hormones are released into the blood stream, their function is enhanced by using specific herbs to increase conversion of thyroxine (T4) to the more bioactive triiodothyronine (T3) by liver cells, increase RXR/TR heterodimerization of thyroid receptors on target cells throughout the cells of the body, increase binding of thyroid hormone receptors to DNA by RXR/TR heterodimers throughout the body, and increasing the effect of T3 on target gene expression within receptor cells throughout the body.
Dr Collins’ work with diagnostic laboratories involved promoting testosterone testing for women in the early 1990s, and the development of hormone profile advanced analytics include ratio analysis.
His personalized medicine approach resulted in his writing What’s Your Menopause Type? (Hardback, 2000) & Discover Your Menopause Type (Softback, 2002), which were the very first books to discuss the significant biochemical and hormonal variability in menopause patient populations.
Dr Collins’ customized therapies have expanded to include a focus on functional & integrative medicine as primary approaches to the broad range of endocrine and hormone related conditions including PMS/PMDD, PCOS & PCO-like syndrome, unhealthy menopause, andropause, prostate disorders, breast disorders, adrenal disorders, fatigue disorders, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, diabetes and other blood sugar disorders.
