In 2008 I went through a lot of emotional pain and torment from loosing just about everything I owned. I literally thought I was going to lose my mind. I was depressed, sad, and each day became harder and harder to get up in the mornings. One morning, a familiar voice from within me said “Get up and go to the park.” That voice was compelling me and so I did. I went to the park, sat on a bench, and wondered what was next. It was there I began to experience χαρά. I smiled, and breathed a heavy sigh of relief. I even cried a little but in a good way.
χαρά means joy. But not in the way we commonly use that word in English.
I use χαρά, pronounced (khar-ah’), which is of Greek origin and used in scripture, because this word better captures the joy I felt on that bench. It was so different and intense, and yet soothing at the same time. It was not fleeting. It did not depend on material things to feel this way. This joy, this χαρά, comes from within, deep down in your soul and never leaves you.
Sitting in the park I was reminded of these words… Jesus Loves You. Jesus Protects You. The pain I was in disolved, and in an instant χαρά came flooding back in.
Jesus Loves You. Jesus Protects You.
These are powerful and comforting words if you choose to let them serve you. And it was a reminder to me that material things will never make me joyful. It may give us happiness in some ways but not χαρά.
Joy is found in sometimes the oddest of places. To find joy you have to look and listen, not with your eyes and ears, but with your heart and soul.
James 1:2 says
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
No matter what you might be going through you can always have Joy.
Proverbs 17:22 says
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
So rejoice! Each and every morning you wake up, rejoice in that Jesus Loves You. Jesus Protects You! Count your blessings! Sing a song, and sing it loud! Shout to the heavens Thank You! Because Joy cometh in the morning!
