Libra is the Cardinal Air sign in the zodiac heralding the Autumnal Equinox, where the light of day and dark of night are equal. The symbol for Libra is the scales of justice, signifying equanimity in relating, balancing and harmonizing all forms of connecting: intimately, socially and diplomatically.
Libra rules the seventh house in the zodiac and is opposite Aries in the first house. Both Aries and Libra are Cardinal signs executing with action and initiative. Aries is Fire and ignites and ushers in the Spring Equinox, the beginning of the astrological journey through all twelve signs. Exploring these polar opposites can help us understand their differences and bring awareness to the lessons each has to share.
Libra is ruled by Venus, the Goddess of Love, which reflects her peace-loving qualities: harmony, cooperation, consideration, accommodation, creative compromise and graceful appreciation. Unlike Aries, which is ruled by Mars the Warrior, Libra wants mutuality, consideration, and equanimity. Libra desires a coming together, a respectful, tactful and principled give-and-take in all relationships. Aries, being “first” and personally impatient, does not consider the “other” in its’ actions or desires.
Aries is the instinctual thrust into life to be autonomous, but Libra sends an invitation to meet and compromise. Where Aries is impulsive, impatient, self-centered, and courageously heroic, Libra is appropriate, reticent, composed and accommodating with the foresight to acquiesce for the sake of fairness, mutual contentment and achievement of goals. The Libra grail is to “know thyself through the Other”, a place of deep understanding that the mirror that “the other” provides opens the door to the road toward Individuation and Wholeness.
