Each year at Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere the Sun shifts into the sign of Capricorn and we enjoy the longest night of the year. Each day thereafter, our daylight slowly grows, steadily bringing illumination to our collective reality as it climbs toward its’ opposite sign Cancer, and the Summer Solstice.
Capricorn is a Cardinal (action) Earth (sensation) sign and is symbolized by the mountain goat. With a steady sense of confidence to climb toward any ambition, Capricorn actively navigates tough terrain to actualize goals and reach the desired destination. To achieve in the face of difficulties Capricorn embodies patience, persistence, tenacity, and a practical willingness to meet challenges along the way.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of the Here-And-Now-Reality, which includes our experience of time, tradition, aging, honor, respect and our public image and reputation. This impersonal sign of the zodiac is associated with the archetypal Father, Authority, Builder, and Business Manager, making strides in our everyday world for the betterment of society.
Capricorn operates in the material realm with a sense of self control, caution, and reserve, finding value in hard work and responsibility. Constantly putting one’s nose to the grind-stone can make Capricorn seem overly serious, pessimistic, ruthless, and impatient. Too much focus, without some fun, can also harden the outlook on life, leaving one feeling depressed unless the load is lightened.
The Capricorn grail is learning to delegate authority while blazing the trail. The lesson is to unburden the Self from strictly adhering to society’s rules of engagement; and with a guiding and empowering hand, actualizing out in the World, bringing structure to the Web-of-Life and our shared inter-connectedness.
